Suitable Springs (and other parts) from Amazon Supply?

Postby shuttercat » Wed Apr 08, 2015 1:12 am

Can I use this Music Wire torsion spring: http://www.amazonsupply.com/dp/B005XQEEEO
This part has about the same force as the mcmaster music wire spring, but slightly larger dimensions. Will it still fit?

I also found that amazon sells 4-40 threaded inserts http://www.amazonsupply.com/dp/B00270ZSIU

They don't have the 7/16 SHCS so here's 1/2 http://www.amazonsupply.com/dp/B00EDUU6YS

Those 4-40 threaded inserts are for use with wood and not plastics.

Regarding springs I will test fitting on my 3D designs and let you know later tonight.

Screws should be fine for most parts, except probably top handle. I bought mine on ebay.

I don't know how much you can understand from a static picture, but springs won't fit correctly. You need smaller ones.

Is it just that the legs are too long? I suppose it's not impossible to trim them.

You can trim legs to a shorter length.

Thing is that wire's OD is slightly larger. You will have to modify 3D design of parts that hold springs in place, so you eliminate the chance of breaking small printed parts when you tighten screws.

If you don't have the knowledge (or 3d software) to do so, I can always do it for you (and everyone else that doesn't have access to McMaster's springs).

Just give me a shout.

Thank you, I will. I'm working on a model fabricated from PE sheet with lower arms supported with skate bearings. I'm in contact with my cousin about getting parts printed but there are a number of refinements I want to pursue after I've learned all I can from my prototype and before I start printing.

If the design can be modified to accommodate these springs that would be great for us international builders as they come to $24 with shipping which is far cheaper than I have found in Europe.
